Dance of Kings and Thieves (Broken Kingdoms book 6) by L.J. Andrews

Blurb

Dreams will become nightmares...

To take her place as rightful queen, Malin Strom stands by the side of the Nightrender and his guild of thieves in the fight to take a throne she never wanted. Now, as warriors from distant kingdoms answer their call, a new battle begins.

But when dark fae side with the Black Palace, Malin and Kase are forced to take drastic measures if they are to have a hope for victory: forge an unwilling alliance with a cruel sea fae, draw out a cursed beast they thought long dead, even risk the lives of everyone they love by twisting the memories of fate itself.

For Kase and Malin, this fight could be their hard-fought salvation...or a vicious end to everything they love.
Welcome to the final stand in the Eastern Kingdom. Where the stakes are higher, the battles are darker, and the romance is spicier. A wicked spin on Cinderalla comes to a head in the final battle of thieves and kings.

Rating and Review

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Review:

Background

Given that this was Malin and Kases' final book, I anticipated it to be fairly average. Considering how I felt about their first two books, I didn't expect to love this book or anything because the others gave me neutral feelings, so why wouldn't this one?

I will say though, in this book, Kase was EXTRA annoying. I'm not a fan of broody men characters. Seriously, I truly don't. And Kase is like the creme de la creme when it comes to that type of character. He was so freaking annoying for no reason! Him being the main guy, I think, is what made the reading experience of the first two books so boring. Because I'm just following this character that is very broody.

Later in the book, though, I started to like him. Somewhat. I can't stress that enough; I somewhat started to like him.

Then, at the end, everything crumbled. For a while, I was thinking this book was going to be 4 stars because I was having a pretty good time. Despite Kase, I liked a lot of the story. But at the end, something happened that I just can't stand for, and the rating was tanked because of it. If the book didn't plummet, if the author didn't make Kase do something I see as unforgiveable, this book would've stayed 4 stars.

What I Didn't Like:

Like I said, I was truly vibing with this book, but it sucked right at the end. Right. At. The. END! WHY?! I was willing to ignore the flaws of this book, but that last scene broke me, and it really ruined some of the story for me.
  • Towards the very end, we had an element of dubcon... and that sucked because I was really vibing with this book.
  • How long it was. Some scenes could’ve been much shorter.
  • Following off the last point, the amount of time we spent on Valen and Elise. Like I love them, I swear I do. They’re my favorite couple in this series so far. But why did we spend so much time worrying about them and their story??? Specifically Valen?? Again, I love Daddy Valen, but did he really need his own chunk of the story?? No!! I don’t think that was needed at all. Especially since we learned Prince Bracken of the Southern Kingdom can become indestructible. We could’ve sent him to the battle instead! I don’t think Valen needed his own section of the story. He had his three books. Again, I love him, but that wasn’t necessary.
  • We got the scene of Valen killing Erik’s dad.
  • Kase
  • The two smut scenes towards the start. Don’t get me wrong, they were well written. And Daddy Kase is…😳interesting. but I think they were fillers. They didn’t need to be there, imo.
  • Kase making me question my morals
  • Did I mention the dubcon scene? I feel like I need to say that again because it really pissed me off.

What I Liked:

Despite my complaining, there were still some things I liked.
  • We got the scene of Valen killing Erik’s dad.
  • Kase up until he did what he did
  • Malin’s character growth
  • Malin’s powers?!?!?!?!? Like, how in the world is anyone meant to compete with her??????? She’s OP!
  • The story was intriguing.
  • The wars were really well written. very fast-paced
  • Kase making me question my morals
  • I just had fun reading it. ofc until the end...

Final Thoughts:

I had a fun time with this book up until, of course, the dubious consent. I don’t think that was needed. I was really starting to like Kase too😭He was hilarious in his own way. He was a bitch, though. Honestly, at some point, I said, "Sabain isn't allowed to treat Kase badly. Kase may be a bitch, but he's my bitch. Only I treat him like shit." Most of the book, I kept calling him Suitkase because of the word suitcase (obviously, lol). And I was slowly starting to like him. For the other two books, I was kind of apathetic towards him because I just found him a little annoying. But in this book, he was even more annoying, but at some point, I started to like him. But when we hit that DUBCON, I almost threw my Kindle. I was so mad. That is one of my most despised tropes. Non-con is the worst trope, in my opinion, so Dubcon is right up there. This book would’ve been 4 stars, I swear to you. But because of that one thing, the rating dropped. I should’ve dropped it to two, but the fact that I liked the rest of the book convinced me to keep it at 3.
